As a part of creative writing, I have created a Kerpoof picture for my students. The assignment for my students is to take the picture that I created and create their own story about what they think is happening. The picture I have created has a bunch of friends at the pool.
I would encourage my students to be creative by:
creating names for the characters
creating relationships between the characters
discuss what happened the day before this scene
create a problem or a situation specifically about this scene
discuss what happened the day after this scene
I will also give my students a vocabulary list in which they would need to use at least 5 new vocabulary terms in their story. The vocabulary terms would be part of their vocabulary list that they were given at the beginning of the week. This will help encourage my students to expand their vocabulary while still being creative. I would also create a model for my students to follow so that they have an idea of what I am expecting of them.
My short story would be like this:
The Splash family consists of two sets of twins. The two dog's, Jake and Craig, are the oldest and the two rabbits, Amaya and Rayna, are the youngest. They have been begging their parents to throw a pool party because they will be going back to school in just one week. Before the Splash family could throw the pool party, the entire family had to investigate the condition of the pool and cabins.
Amaya and Rayna began creating the party list while Jake and Craig began cleaning the pool. They invited their friends Aggy the alligator, Squirt the dolphin, Snipe and Tike the foxes, and Laxy the cat. While the party was beginning to unfold, Laxy finds a nice spot on the desk to sunbathe. She hopes not to get wet, but Aggy decides that she should. Aggy dives off of the diving board and drastically smacks the water!
Snipe dives for cover under the water and Rayna tries to block her face from getting wet. Squirt tries to plow the beach ball so that it hits Amaya and Tike, dropping Craig on the raft. What a catastrophe that would have been! Finally, Jake shows up with his towel in hand and greets all of his friends. The group will come back tomorrow for a picnic! Tell a Story
